The affected areas are often very dry, red and itchy skin. Unfortunately, those who have allergies often suffer with this condition as well.

Frequent Sinus Infections–When the body overacts to an allergen, it produces additional fluids. These fluids then block the sinus passages, and bacteria and germs that are usually able to pass through and leave the body are able to invade the tissue lining the sinus cavity causing infection.

Infection tends to be more common with those who suffer from allergies because the body’s attempt to fight off foreign substances weakens the immune system making the body less effective in freeing itself of germs. Sinus infections can cause headaches, nasal congestion, and fever.

Chronic Cough-A cough that does not go away, is mostly dry, and only sometimes brings up phlegm into the mouth is usually an indication of increased fluid in the sinus cavity. Additional sinus fluid is often due to a reaction to allergens.

Since the cough is a symptom rather than a condition, and even though it can be treated, eliminating the cause is the only sure way to eliminate the cough for good. If a cough persists, seek medical advice immediately as it is a symptom of many conditions other than allergies.

Itchy Nose-The nose knows when there are allergens present, and it lets the body know with an itch. This one symptom clearly defines the presence of an allergen from just a stuffy nose associated with a cold. The only way to eliminate allergy symptoms is to avoid contact with the allergen that precipitates the reaction. But knowing and being able to recognize these common symptoms will allow you intervene earlier and provide relief for your child sooner.

While the immune system is involved in some way, the exact cause of eczema is unknown. Typically, contact with some external allergen triggers an allergic reaction, leading to the typical skin symptoms and changes seen in sufferers. Baby eczema is first noticed as a reddish scaly rash on the baby’s face which gradually worsens to the point where it becomes irritated and cracked. In babies, the disorder unfortunately affects between ten and twenty percent of all infants in the United States.

Parents need not worry too much as in most instances of this condition it clears up completely; generally before the child has reached their second birthday. Not every child is so lucky and it can follow them into adulthood when the condition may even become severe. This is primarily a condition suffered by babies and young children although it can affect someone of any age. Although statistics vary, almost all sufferers will have experienced bouts of this condition since their fifth birthday but almost one third before they were a year old.

Baby eczema is easily recognizable because the infant wants to scratch itself owing to the red, scaly skin on their face, arms and legs and is the most common form, known as atopic eczema. This type, atopic eczema, tends to run in families and is often triggered when the baby’s skin isn’t moisturized correctly. Often the trigger mechanism is either the detergent or fabric conditioner used to wash the baby’s clothes and this can also be the trigger for the condition in adults as well. It would also seem that breastfeeding has preventative properties as a link between baby eczema and mothers who wean their babies early has been found.

Other medical conditions, such as respiratory infections, may also act as triggers. Food allergies in the baby or allergic rhinitis can also cause this condition to flare up but if the baby’s mother suffers with asthma, this can also be a contributing factor. Food allergies are thought to account for up to 30 percent of childhood cases; if a particular food is suspected as the likely cause, that food can then be removed from the diet. And then there are potential allergies to foods. If you itch when you eat peanuts, you might think about eliminating peanuts from your diet.

Once you understand what causes eczema and triggers your symptoms, you can then look at ways of eliminating or moderating those triggers. There is no cure for eczema now, but that doesn’t mean you have to look forward to a life sentence of itching and misery.
